Oaxaca: Art, Culture, and Politics

The city of Oaxaca stands at the crossroads at both cultural and istorical crossroads. Settled thusands of years ago by the Zapotec, a great city was constructed that is now known as Monte Alban.

Today, Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful cities in all of Mexico. Known for it’s wonderful architecture, cuisine, arts, and crafts, it is a joy to wander it’s streets. However, Oaxaca is also a political center, caught in the contemporary power struggle between the southern indigenous groups and the entrenched power elites of the north and center. On this journey, we will explore these realities with lectures and tours led by local artists, professors, and poltical activists. We will see first hand the expression of these forces on the various aspects of Oaxacan culture.
